Frequently Asked Questions About Birth Doula Support

  1. What does a birth doula do?

A doula offers steady, compassionate support through pregnancy, labor, and birth. I provide emotional reassurance, physical comfort, and evidence-based information — helping you feel centered, informed, and confident every step of the way.

  1. How is a doula different from a midwife or nurse?

Midwives and nurses focus on your clinical care. As your doula, my focus is on your comfort, your choices, and your experience. I’m there to hold space, offer guidance, and help create a calm environment where you can birth with confidence.

  1. When is the best time to hire a doula?

Most families reach out between 20–30 weeks of pregnancy, but there’s no wrong time (unless I'm already booked up!). The earlier we begin, the more time we have to connect, prepare, and design the birth experience you envision.

  1. What’s included in your birth doula package?

My full-service package includes a private childbirth preparation session, customized birth planning, educational resources, ongoing text and phone support, continuous labor support, birth photography, a postpartum home visit, and lactation counseling.

  1. Do you attend hospital, birth center, and home births?

Yes. I support families in all birth settings. My role is to help you feel informed and grounded wherever you choose to give birth.

  1. How do you support my partner during labor?

Partners are an important part of the birth team. I guide and encourage them to offer hands-on comfort, emotional support, and rest when needed — so you both feel connected and confident.

  1. What if you’re unavailable when I go into labor?

In the rare event I’m unavailable, a trusted backup doula from my network will step in. You’ll have the chance to connect with them before your birth so you feel fully supported.

  1. How do we stay in touch before and after birth?

You’ll have direct access to me via text, email, or phone throughout pregnancy and postpartum. After birth, we’ll schedule an in-home visit to debrief, check in on recovery, and offer lactation support.

  1. What comfort techniques do you use during labor?

I use a blend of breathwork, positioning, massage, rebozo techniques, visualization, and grounding touch — all personalized to your needs and rhythm.

  1. Do you offer childbirth education?

Yes. My in-home session is designed around your questions, your preferences, and your unique birth plan — so you enter labor feeling calm, capable, and informed.

  1. What lactation support do you provide?

I offer gentle, evidence-based lactation counseling in your home to support feeding goals, improve latch and positioning, and help you feel confident in your body’s ability to nourish your baby.

  1. How long do you stay after the birth?

I typically remain 1–2 hours after birth to ensure you’re comfortable, settled, and supported during the first feeding and early bonding time.

  1. What happens at the postpartum visit?

We’ll revisit your birth experience, answer questions, and support recovery and feeding. This visit also provides time to reflect, process, and receive guidance for your next steps in healing and parenting.

  1. How do I know if hiring a doula is right for me?

If you value calm, personalized care and want a knowledgeable guide to walk beside you, a doula may be the perfect fit. Many families say their doula’s presence made all the difference.
